What Not Jazz trio at O'Dragon, Montreal

What Not - O'Dragon, Montreal

Due to overwhelming demand, I've finally converted some old compositions/arrangements to MP3!

The following excerpts (approx. 1min each) were all performed & simultaneously mixed live using my quite primitive MIDI equipment.

WinAMP Audio player Zonavar's Unix Audio Hardware/Software Compendium

Most of my creations were composed and/or arranged using the magic of MIDI (Music Instrument Digital Interface). MIDI allows me tremendous control and flexibility to record entire multi-instrument pieces single-handedly.

Currently I'm playing Jazz, almost exclusively, on acoustic piano and Rhodes.

Artistic friends on the net:

Glynn Abbott Glynn Abbott
Vocalist/Guitarist/Composer...

Glynn's been playing & composing since the mid-60's (see: The Mustags - 1964). He started out playing folk songs but quickly introduced rock & roll, country and some blues & jazz into his repertoire. Glynn's first significant recording was in 1981 with his composition Blue Berry Wine.

If you caught Glynn's monthly Koppers show, in Kitchener, you'll probably saw me behind the keyboards & lead guitar!

What Next What Next   [L to R]
Paul Vandyk: bass, Paul Taylor: keyboards/guitar/vocals, Duane Wolfe: drums/vocals

Paul, Paul & Duane are ol' hands, having been at this for more than a decade now, whatever the genre may be - jazz standards, latin or contemporary - these guys will take it to the edge (and sometimes beyond).

Catch them live in Waterloo, Friday & Saturday evenings at Hannah's Bella Bistro, most Sunday afternoons at Benjamin's in St.Jacobs ... and you may occasionally find me guesting on guitar or keyboards. Alternatively, experience them wherever you please on their debut CD: First Out.

Paisagens Manuela Lopes
Vocalist/Guitarist/Composer/Arranger/...

I spent a sensational evening, mid May 2002, listening & talking with Manuela & friends in Quinta do Lago, Algarve, Portugal. From her outstanding voice & guitar, to the choice repertoire & arrangements, each set was a truly delightful blend of African/Portuguese, Latin, Jobim, jazz standards, Carpenters, ...
Sorry I couldn't make the gig in Albufeira, but I did finally listen to the 1998 CD, Paisagens, during the Marbella Jazz Festival, Málaga, Spain - muito bom!

Dale Marcell Dale Mars Marcell
Drummer/Author/Teacher/Witchdoctor...

Dale's probably been drummin' since the day he was born!
Founder of the Marcell School of Drum, author of Drumming Games, and, drummer Mars from the band & self-titled CD: Mars & the adventures of Trout; Dale hosts his interactive workshops and Drum Circles all over the world, instructing in various methods & applications of drum therapy.

Peter Webb - Nashville '93 Peter Webb
Vocalist/Guitarist/Composer/Arranger/...

Pete's been payin' more than his dues since long before we met, in the late '80s at Waterloo's Ole English Parlour, whence our impromptu late nite jams sessions began. Listenning to Pete's incredible voice sing some of the greatest lyrics - his own compositions - was a simply awesome experience!
Though I've lost touch with Pete since he left Southern Ontario, for some worldly travels, I just have to put on Mileage and Pete's right there ... I have no doubt he & his music shall thrive.

Elation Kevin Laliberté
Guitarist/Composer/Arranger/...

Kevin and I met in the late '80s, in a UoW Jazz Appreciation course, and immediately formed our own jazz group (which also included Leo Valvassori on bass, Janice Gladstone on vocals, et. al.). Since then Kevin has dropped his multimeter and now plays guitar full-time. He can be heard on guitarist Roger Scannura's Medina - Exploration & Magic of Flamenco, Kevin's own CD Elation, and, recently with Jesse Cook.

Carpet Frogs Leo Valvassori
Bassist/Vocalist/...

Leo and I met in Waterloo, in the late '80s, and were soon after playing music together. We hooked-up again, with guitar legend Mel Brown, for the opening of Kitchener's infamous Pop-the-Gator. Since then, Leo's made Toronto his home and has become somewhat of a local legend himself.
Leo can be heard at Grossman's with Mike McDonald, in the Toronto cast of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), on Michael Pickett's Blues Money (1998), in Ellen McIlwaine's Women in (E)motion festival (1998), on Jamie Warren's Fallen Angel, and the Carpet Frogs: Frog Curry ...

Mel Brown Mel Brown
Guitarist/Vocalist/... Blues Legend

I first had the honor of meeting & playing with Mel Brown at the opening of Kitchener's renowned Blues Club: Pop-the-Gator. Sadly, Mel's since passed-away - RIP.

Flamingo Soup Steve Lehmann
Pianist/Composer/Arranger/...

I first met & heard Steve in various KW Jazz Clubs, playing jazz piano with the Paul Mitchell Group - I was instantly hooked on both Paul & Steve's improvisational styles.

Benny Green's Soulful Days

Benny Green
Pianist/Composer/Arranger

I recently had the pleasure to hear & meet Benny at the River Run Center in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. A dedicated fan, I regularly enjoy listenning to Benny's smooth Jazz style, on such CDs as: Kaleidoscope, The Place To Be, etc...

Kung-Fu: TLC Jeff Danna
Guitarist/Composer/Arranger

Though I've lost track of my HomeBoy JD since we left the Hood; our High School collaborations were very influencial to my own musical directions... It was evident, even during those early Channel Five rock'n'roll sessions - from his versatility, diversity & shear determination - he was destined... Kudos!

Wayne Cass Wayne Cass
Guitarist/Composer/Arranger

Toronto's best kept secret is finally out - as Wayne's Independent release: the New Piano reaches #1 on the Jazz Charts!
Gigs include: Wayne Cass Quartet - upstairs at the Rivoli, on Kyp Harness' God’s Footstool (1992), on Bob Wiseman's Presented by Lake Michigan Soda (1991), and (over two decades ago at Burlington's Central Arena) with the Young Adults.

Trombone - KW clubs

Trombonist/Composer/Arranger

I first met Ron on the KW Jazz Scene, playing jazz Trombone and leading his band, at the pretentious King Street Trio.

Growing-up during the '70s, I was mostly exposed to the mainstream Pop/Rock bands and performers *; such as: the Beatles, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, Yes, Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jeff Beck, David Bowie and Alice Cooper ... to name but a few *

Drawn early on, by instrumental Jazz-Rock fusions (i.e. Miles Davis), I became more aware of the older Jazz Greats (i.e. Fats Waller, Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, etc.) and my musical predilection now encompasses the Swing, Bop, Cool and Fusion jazzes of the '30s, '40s, '50s, and '60s; however, I also enjoy many other progressive music styles including: Ambient, Electronic, New Age, Classical and Contemporary genres - as well as numerous TV & Movie Soundtracks.

Composing, arranging and playing influences include: Lester Young/Teddy Wilson, Chick Webb, Erroll Garner, Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli, Nat King Cole, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Tadd Dameron, Hank Jones, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clarke, Charles Mingus, Hampton Hawes, Elmo Hope, Gigi Gryce, Benny Golson, Tina Brooks, Oliver Nelson/Eric Dolphy, Ahmad Jamal, Bobby Timmons, Bill Evans, Duke Pearson, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Victor Feldman, Chick Corea(R.T.F.), Keith Jarrett/Charles Lloyd, Gyorgy Cziffra(György), Glenn Gould, Joe Zawinul/Weather Report, George Duke, Michel Petrucciani, ...
